No Shorter Distance

When our beliefs do not tally with reality, there is conflict and frustration as life unfolds ineffectively.  The temptation is to pack up our beliefs unaltered, move on and once again futilely attempt to con the universe. How long till we surrender? How long till our arrogance, ignorance, or both give way to humility and enlightenment? How long till we gain the character and courage to demolish the false foundation we’ve built our lives upon and replace it with the truth?

There are no shortcuts that can circumvent the truth. If the truth is too formidable to negotiate, we are out of luck. The only alternative is to proceed fraudulently. And how long can that go on until we admit to ourselves that all the irretrievable time and effort spent has rendered nothing but disappointment and punishment?  There is nothing longer than a shortcut based on false premises. And there is no shorter distance between two points than the truth.

Our beliefs, no matter how strong or passionately expressed, cannot change what is.  In fact, the opposite is true; it is reality that must shape our beliefs. And when our beliefs tally with reality we may very well find ourselves at a distance from the crowd - the crowd that finds us odd and impractical. Imagine that; they live lies, but we are impractical. In fact, while mocking us, they hop upon our backs and are opportunistically carried forward, taking advantage of the courage they do not possess.

Discovering the truth is a solitary act. Another, such as a mentor may serve as a labor saving device by placing the truth more within our reach, but apprehending reality can only be done one mind at a time. Possessing the truth does set us free - free from the dark, cramped space of ignorance, fear, and dependence upon those who intimidate or deceive us the most.  What advantage can there be in avoiding our own salvation? Why is the truth impractical for some yet indispensable to others? Why do some choose to inhabit the abyss, while others settle for nothing less than the apex?

The concept of truth can be frightening as well as liberating. Nothing exposes us more completely than what is.  We are revealed to the world and to ourselves by the truth. We are set free or forced out of hiding, as all facades disintegrate. We rejoice or we tremble as we are paraded in front of the universe so bare naked that even our hearts and souls can be seen.  We are created or destroyed as all that is good is reinforced, and all that is bad is washed away. We live or we die as we surrender or as we retreat. And if we retreat we once again become enveloped in darkness, groping for the exit but still too afraid and unwilling to turn on the light. But with surrender comes peace - the peace we have been looking for - the end that justified all our convoluted means but never came as a reward. But now, once on the right road it comes naturally and with ease. Yes, the truth will set us free. And no matter how long it takes to get there, there is no shorter distance.
