(November 21, 2018 / JNS) In a rare move, Israel voted against an American proposal that was defeated on Monday to alter a U.N. resolution combating sexual harassment.

The United States sought to water down language in the nonbinding measure regarding accessibility to safe abortions and reproductive health care, in addition to acknowledging the right of females to determine issues pertaining to sexuality.

Courtney Nemroff, deputy U.S. representative to the U.N. Economic and Social Council, said “we do not recognize abortion as a method of family planning, nor do we support abortion in our reproductive health assistance.”

In addition to the United States, the resolution was also supported by India, China, Russia, the Vatican and several Muslim nations.
