(JNS) Syrian state media reported Wednesday that Israel is responsible for attacks on a Syrian military post on the outskirts of Damascus.

“This morning, Israeli warplanes fired several missiles from Lebanese airspace on one of our military positions in the Damascus countryside,” said a statement released by the Syrian army over state media. “Our air defense systems blocked them and destroyed most of them.”

“The general command of the armed forces holds Israel fully responsible for the dangerous consequences of its recurring, aggressive and uncalculated adventures,” an army statement said.

It is reported that several Israeli missiles indeed struck their targets. The Israeli government refused to comment on the attack.

The strikes reportedly occurred in Jamraya, approximately 7 miles northwest of Damascus. In addition to other military facilities, Jamraya is home to a branch of the Syrian Scientific Studies and Research Center. The center has been sanctioned by the United States and France for its role in chemical weapons production. Additional facilities in the area were also targeted.

On January 9, Syria’s army accused Israel of targeting a military base in Qutayfeh, outside Damascus.

Israeli attacks are aimed at preventing the transfer of advanced weaponry from Iran through Syria to Hezbollah in Lebanon, actions which Israel considers to be a “red line.”

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Security Cabinet members inspected the Syrian border on the Golan Heights Tuesday. “We desire peace, but remain prepared for any scenario,” said Netanyahu following the inspections. “I do not propose to anyone to test our resolve.”
