Major Jewish Group Calls on Poland to Apprehend Attackers of Israeli Soccer Team

(JNS.org) The American Jewish Committee (AJC) is calling on Polish authorities to use all available resources to apprehend the men responsible for attacking members of an Israeli soccer team late Wednesday, in what appears to be an anti-Semitic attack.

“The Polish government must be unambiguously clear that there is zero tolerance for any anti-Semitic act, especially a violent hate crime,” said Agnieszka Markiewicz, acting director of AJC’s Central Europe branch.

“The match between Israeli and Polish teams reflects the generally healthy and strong relations between Poland and Israel. Expeditious action by the Polish authorities is imperative,” Markiewicz added.

Players from the Hapoel Petah Tikva soccer team were attacked Wednesday following a match against MKS Ciechanow in the Polish city of Sochocin, located roughly 45 miles from Warsaw.

“After most of the players returned to the hotel, a number of masked fascists who are fans of Legia Warsaw burst onto the field and tried to beat a number of crew members who were left behind, two of whom were lightly injured,” the team stated on its official Facebook page.
