(JNS.org) Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with eight senior leaders of the American Jewish community Sunday in New York to discuss Israel’s relations with Diaspora Jewry, as well as other topics including the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the Iranian nuclear issue.  

The meeting occurred ahead of Netanyahu’s upcoming address at the United Nations General Assembly Tuesday, and amid the ongoing internal Jewish controversy surrounding prayer rights at the Western Wall.

“The meeting took place in an excellent atmosphere,” according to a statement released by the Prime Minister’s Office. 

Jewish leaders asked Netanyahu for clarification regarding the creation of “a united prayer platform,” at the Western Wall.

Several unnamed sources who attended the meeting said the outcome was “good” and “positive,” reported Haaretz, with Netanyahu’s approach "forthcoming." But no concrete promises were made regarding the construction of a new egalitarian prayer pavilion at the Jerusalem holy site.

Jewish organizations represented at the meeting included American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, the Jewish Federations of North America and the American Jewish Committee (AJC).
