Polar Vortex Causes Dangerous Drop in Temperature to Tri-State Area

The bitter cold air released by the polar vortex in the Midwest will expand into the New York Area behind the winter storm, bringing the coldest air to the region in the 2019 year.

Wind Chill Advisories are currently in effect for most of the Tri-State area until 10 a.m. Thursday morning and a Wind Advisory is also in effect through 10 p.m. Wednesday.

Snow squalls moved through the area later in the day on Wednesday causing poor visibility and accumulating up to an inch of snow in certain areas. This should mark as a warning to those in the Tri-State area for the extreme drop in temperature heading their way on Thursday.

The biggest concern for Thursday is that plunging temperatures will cause roads and sidewalks to be completely covered in ice. Winds could also gust greater than 40 mph as the temperature plummets to single digits.

Wednesday night will be windy and bitterly cold with a low temperature of 5 degrees. With dawn winds possibly gusting up to 30 mph, however, it will feel more like -15 to -25 degrees.

Thursday will be bitterly cold and windy with ineffective sunshine. The temperature will raise a drop, but it will still feel like -10 degrees due to high winds.

Please take caution when traveling Wednesday night and Thursday throughout the day. Keep an eye out for black ice and, if possible, stay off the roads and indoors as much as possible.
