Burn Your Bridges

Wise men have contingency plans, but resorting to old ineffective and destructive ways must never be an option. Change is difficult, but since we believe it will lead us to a better place, we acquiesce. With enthusiasm, the new route is quite refreshing. But as our zeal naturally wanes and the opposing winds blow harder, there is a tendency to retreat. We bewilderedly seek aid and comfort. Tragically, we believe that our only recourse lies back in the proverbial dungeon from which we escaped. The painful place that drove us away now becomes our refuge. Again and again we run away and again and again we run back to what is easiest and most familiar, albeit brutal and damaging. What appears to be a sanctuary turns out to be an asylum.

This vacillation between virtue and comfort perpetuates because human nature demands both equally. And as long as both are available to us we will be torn. Growth requires the temporary inconvenience of leaving our comfort zone, which makes it quite tempting to abandon the hard work of selfimprovement in favor of the status quo. Because reversing our trajectory is an option it is also a consideration. So, to move forward we must remove that option, leaving no opportunity to move backwards.

We’ve often been warned to never burn our bridges to have something to fall back upon for fear that our plans will not unfold according to design. But sheer knowledge of this safety net can keep us from achieving the rare levels of genius and courage both needed to succeed. Instead, burn your bridges. Leave no ground behind you. Make sure there is nowhere to go but forward. Burn your bridges. Even when you are most desperate and vulnerable, burn your bridges. Adapt to the new universe you now inhabit a better place where old distractions and worn out possibilities are replaced by new inspiration and the fresh excitement of challenge. Let this be your new safe haven.

What lament could possibly be in your heart? Make obsolete those values and beliefs that never cared for you. Abandon those habits you acquired by default and that ultimately imprisoned you. Break free for the last time. Face in one direction only, cut through the wind, ignore the siren’s call, never stop moving and never look back as you burn your bridges.
